In the third edition of Super Smash Brothers, Super Smash Bros. Brawl introduces, yet again, more characters, stages, and editable options for gameplay. New frame data, better optimization, on a new console (the Wii). Most players of Smash still use the Gamecube controller to their advantage, as the Wii controller proves to be very difficult to do anything on, especially competitively. The Gamecube controller is able to be plugged right into the Wii, resulting in almost no input lag, unfortunately proceeding games don't have this advantage. This is widely pronounced as the least competitively viable game in the series. Some (mostly casual players) consider this as the best game in the series, however, as it is not competitively viable, most people consider this as the worst game in the series.
New characters were introduced to this version of Super Smash Bros., as always. The full collection of characters is both listed here and is posted as a picture at the very bottom of this page. The characters first unlocked include: Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, Samus Aran, Zero Suit Samus, Yoshi, Kirby, Fox McCloud, Pikachu, King Bowser, Princess Peach, Ice Climbers, Princess Zelda, Sheik, Pit, Wario, Ike, Pokémon Trainer, Diddy Kong, Meta Knight, Lucas, King Dedede, and Olimar. The characters unlocked through gameplay include: Ness, Marth, Luigi, Falco Lombardi, Captain Falcon, Lucario, R.O.B., Ganondorf, Mr. Game and Watch, Jigglypuff, Toon Link, Wolf O'Donnell, Snake, and Sonic.
While Super Smash Bros. Brawl was widely renounced the worst game for competitively played Smash, Brawl introduces a new group-type gamemode, rotation, which allows up to sixteen players and switches out winners or losers after each round. Brawl introduces 42 Events, which are matches with predetermined battle conditions for winning the match, like defeating opponents in a time limit or reaching a goal. Each of these events has three difficulty levels, and high scores for each. There is also two-player events, however there are only 21 of these. There is also a Stadium mode, which is a collection of minigames. There is a new Adventure mode, labelled as "The Subspace Emissary", which includes a unique storyline and bosses, cutscenes and enemies from previous games. This is also the first game to include online multiplayer gameplay.
There are many new stages, and almost every single stage in Brawl has changed in one way from Melee to Brawl. The unlocked stages include: Battlefield, Final Destination, Delfino Plaza, Mushroomy Kingdom, Mario Circuit, Rumble Falls, Bridge of Eldin, Norfair, Frigate Orpheon, Yoshi's Island, Halberd, Lylat Cruise, Pokémon Stadium 2, Port Town Aero Dive, Castle Siege, WarioWare, Inc., Distant Planet, Smashville, New Pork City, Summit, Skyworld, PictoChat, Shadow Moses Island, Temple, Yoshi's Island, Onett, Corneria, Rainbow Cruise, and Brinstar. The unlockable stages are: Luigi's Mansion, Pirate Ship, Spear Pillar, 75m, Mario Bros., Flat Zone 2, Hanenbow, Green Hill Zone, Jungle Japes, Green Greens, Big Blue, and Pokémon Stadium.
This is widely renounced as the least competitively-viable game in the Smash series, so very few competitions of this game were held and most of them were at the launch of this game when people thought this game had some potential. Most people in the split from Melee to Smash 4 just played Melee.
